The microprocessor (µP) used in the original Motronic design (the ML1.1) is the CDP1802 introduced  by RCA in 1976. The RCA 1802 8-bit microprocessors has a most unique architecture. Its memory chips are incompatible to any other manufacturers product. In late 1984, BOSCH redesigned the digital board of the ML1.1/ML1.2 to replace the four RCA ROMs with a single 2732 EPROM. The BOSCH and the Porsche part numbers did not change since both designs function the same. A socket was added to the circuit board which makes the EPROM removable. This design change was made for manufacturing convenience only since both BOSCH and Porsche are against aftermarket chips.
