"Early Motronic" is used herein to describe the Motronic ML1 and ML2 series ECUs. These are RCA 1802 processor designs.

"Late Motronic" is used herein to describe the Motronic ML3.1 series ECU and later designs ["ML3.1+" or  "ML3.1 plus" term are sometimes used]. These are Intel 8051 Microcontroller based designs. Many generic versions of the 8051 and 8052 have been used. The "Early Motronic" AFM has been redesigned for the "Late Motronic".

Definition:  Formatted Map
The terms "Formatted Map" or "Map Format ML3.1+" are used at www.motronic.ws to describe the map format that became standardized in 1984 with the introduction of the BOSCH Motronic ML3.1 series ECU. The "Formatted Map" structure was used for over a decade in new Motronic designs and was gradually fazed-out with the newer OBDII designs.
